"The beatings will continue until morale improves." This wasn't a great management philosophy when Captain Bligh instituted it on the HMS Bounty in the 1700's. So why do we see the same basic concept still exist in businesses, government agencies, and even non-profits today?
In this podcast, organizational culture experts Simon Bray and Matthew Leader talk to people from all walks of life to learn about their jobs and figure out why they work, how they work and what makes them great (we assume) at it. Listen in (or taste the lash)!
Simon Bray is an expert in leadership and culture, with extensive experience of transforming organizations to be more innovative, collaborative and high performing. After gaining a degree in Psychology, he began his career with Accenture where he specialized in organization design, before moving to a boutique change management consultancy called 7days. He was then with the innovation agency ?What If! from 2005 to 2014, leading teams in London, New York and São Paulo. After that he spent 2 years as a Partner at The Rise Group, focusing on helping organizations define and activate their ideal culture. He is now a Principal at Vega Factor, on a mission to unlock human potential at scale, to build the world's most adaptive organizations, and to fundamentally upgrade the tools we use to build great cultures.
Simon once worked as a private detective, has hitch-hiked across the US and is a greedy eater.
Matt Leader is a Principal at Vega Factor, where he focuses on helping organizations build high-performing cultures through the science of total motivation. He can do this because he's had a lot of jobs, some great, some terrible, but all of which made him think about why anybody did anything. Some of his previous stops on the career train include pirate radio DJ, construction worker, bond salesman, Hasidic party caterer, political operative, picture-frame maker, gardener, television writer, truck-unloader, bee executioner, customs attorney, bandwidth trader, department store Santa, PR hack, boat waiter, soldier, start-up founder, ethics & compliance specialist, dental distributor, movie zombie and Haitian radio contest manager.
Matt has a BA in political science from Yeshiva University, and law degrees from University of Cambridge (UK) and Fordham University School of Law.
